Contact Lenses |
Our professionals can help fit you into a pair of contact lenses that is just right for you. We are experts in fitting contact lenses and can handle the most specialized needs. Whether rigid, soft, toric or multifocal, we are experienced in handling the most difficult of prescriptions.
If you have allergies or dry eyes, then you know these conditions can be particularly annoying to contact lens wearers. In the past many people had to quit wearing their lenses because of these conditions. However, new lens materials and allergy medications have made it possible for these patients to eliminate the burning itchy eyes associated with allergies and dry eyes.
The latest advancement in contact lens technology is the use of Silicone Hydrogel material. The silicone based material allows for more oxygen permeability to the eye for better corneal health and increased wettability for better comfort. Many of the newer lenses also use wetting agents to increase moisture retention of the contacts. Be sure to ask your doctor which lenses are best for you.
We often participate in Clinical Studies for new contact lens products. If you are a contact lens wearer and would like to participate in a study, please call Sheba, our contact lens technician. If you ever fit the criteria for a study, we will notify you. Patients are often times reimbursed for participating.

iZon High Resolution Lenses |
The eye is made up of many irregularities or aberrations that can distort incoming light and therefore impact the quality of your vision. Using wavefront technology, our Z-View® Aberrometer measures these optical aberrations of the eye. Up until now, we have not been able to measure these imperfections. It's a transformational breakthrough in vision diagnostics. In just one minute, your doctor can detect microscopic irregularities resulting in your unique iPrint - an optical fingerprint.
We send this iPrint to a specialized lab which then customizes your personal prescription incorporating all of the aberrations of your eyes. The result is your iZon High Resolution Lenses. You will notice a significant improvement in the quality of your vision - seeing clearer, sharper, more vividly than ever before. In fact, current iZon wearers describe their vision as High-Definition vision.

Eye Infections, Eye Injuries, Dry Eyes, Allergies |
Eye Infections or Eye Injuries : Our office provides emergency services for eye infections, acute vision loss and eye injuries. Please call our office at 719-597-7101 during office hours. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. State of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.
Dry Eyes : Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; eye drops for treating allergies; and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals.
Eye Allergies : For allergies, prescription medications such as Pataday and Elestat are amazingly effective and safe even in children as young as three. Let us know when you come in for your appointment if you have special allergy needs and we will be happy to help you.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes |
Cataracts : The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.
Glaucoma : Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.
Diabetes : Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

Optomap Retinal Imaging |
The Optomap® Retinal Exam is the world's first device which produces a digital image of almost the entire retina. Its state-of-the-art technology allows our doctors to capture an extended view of the retina (200 degrees) in less than half a second and provides photo-documentation. With the Optomap, doctors can diagnose serious eye conditions such as retinal detachments, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy and certain cancers. With photo-documentation done annually we can see any changes in our patients’ retinas from one year to the next.
The best part about the Optomap is that our patients can see what the inside of their own eyes look like. Our exam rooms are equiped with new flatscreen monitors to bring the images chairside directly to our patients. Thanks to Optomap, having your eyes checked is accurate, faster, and less invasive than ever before.

Special Testing |
Technological Advancements In Eye Care:
In staying true to our high standards of excellence in eye care it is important that we adapt to new changes in innovation and technology. Our office has recently received four new pieces of diagnostic equipment to better serve you.
We now have a Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) visual testing machine to quickly and accurately detect any peripheral vision loss. This screening machine is important in detecting diseases like early glaucoma, cataracts, vascular occlusions, neurological disorders, and even tumors. The advantage of the FDT over other conventional field testing machines is that it is much faster and easier for patients to use. It used to take up to ten to fifteen minutes with older machines, whereas now it takes only one to two minutes per screening.
We’ve also acquired the newest Humphrey’s Visual Field (HVF) testing instrument. This is a more complete visual field testing, which maps out exactly where and to what extent the defects are in your peripheral vision. If we ever detect a visual defect on the FDT, we will be sure to perform this comprehensive visual field to measure the size of the defect. This test is a bit more time consuming, but it is the best at mapping out our patient's vision. The Humphrey’s Visual Field is considered the gold standard in following peripheral vision loss due to ocular disease.
We can now scan your retina and optic nerve with our Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT) . The OCT takes an in-depth image of the retinal layers deep inside your eyes in much the same manner as an ultrasound. The images produced form detailed map displays for our doctors to be able to have information that was never available before. Now we can more accurately track retinal pathology like glaucoma, macular degeneration, macular edema, and nerve layer abnormalities.

To evaluate the front optical surface of your eye (cornea) we have a Corneal Topographer . A Corneal Topographer is useful for taking a point by point contour map of the front surface of the eye. This type of information is crucial for accurate fittings on contact lenses, diagnosis of corneal astigmatism, corneal changes over time, pre-screening refractive surgery candidates, progression of keratoconus, and evaluating corneal pathology. This is also a useful tool for a relatively new innovation called corneal refractive therapy which patients will now have access to in our practice. Please read the section on corneal refractive therapy to find out more.
In order to keep our patients’ health as our number one priority, we firmly believe that we must be at the cutting edge of eye care diagnostic equipment and refractive technology .
